Camp Daniel Boone, North Carolina
Boy Scout Summer Camp in the mountains of North Carolina at Camp Daniel Boone. More than seven hundred scouts were there from as far
away as Louisiana and Wisconsin. Special thanks to all the scouts and their Troop leaders who treated Byron very kindly and "hats off" to
Dan Rogers, Camp Director and author of
America One Step at a Time, a 3,400 Mile Walk in Search of Ameica, for inviting Byron to be the
Guest Instructor for the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge. The week went much too fast and Byron's only regret was that his teaching
schedule wouldn't permit him to stay the entire eight-weeks.
Special Thanks to Ambre Tiggs at Ginkgo Adventures in St. Louis, MO

Our Wild Wisdom course in Missouri was a huge success, thanks to the planning and
coordinating efforts of our Missouri outdoors partner Ambre Tiggs, owner of the St. Louis
wilderness adventure company, www.ginkgoadventures.com. The sold-out course, with
fourteen students in attendance ranging in age from 29-64, was held in the Wilderness Trail
region of Meramec State Park near Sullivan, MO. Participants successfully made jerky,
cleaned and cooked a rabbit, completed improvised gear tasks, and earned cereal bars for

breakfast during the slingshot shoot. On
Day Two during the challenge events, the
rain gods let loose big time and students
learned the magic of the knee-high fire in
the pouring rain. Besides two stray
racoons who visited our camp, we had the
pleasure of being visited by Barry
Schmidt, a former USAF Survival
Instructor whom Byron hadn't seen in
several decades. All-in-all a bodacious
experience and a wonderful trip traveling,
visiting, and camping in the states of
Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi,
Alabama, and Georgia.
Another Standing-Room-Only Wilderness Survival Seminar
Special thanks to the owners of the Alpine Shop www.alpineshop.com in St Louis for their warm hospitality and for allowing Byron the
opportunity to conduct an evening seminar at their outdoors store. More than 50 outdoorsy folks were in attendance for his popular seminar,
Knee-High Fire in the Pouring Rain
(TM). When asked what he thought of the jam-packed room, Byron humbly replied, "Just wish there would
have been room for the thirty they turned away."

Introducing Jimmy Culpepper of Georgia Outdoor Survival Skills
Note from Byron: This dude has got to be the most awesome and nicest survival guy I've ever met. Drove six-hours to meet him at his home
north of Columbus, GA, visited with him three-hours, then I cruised on to Atlanta for a business meeting. Left his place freaking stoked. Jimmy is
unreal at primitive fire making and was kind enough to share some of his secrets with me. He is the first survival instructor I've ever met, who after
creating a coal using a bow & drill, leaves the coal on the ground smoldering and casually walks off to his car to get something. Unbelievable.
I hope that one day Jimmy and I can conduct a weekend course together for
students, his survival magic mixed with my gig on things - creating a bodacious
mix of modern and primitive skills for those taking the class. What an event that
could be. Jimmy has my highest recommendation for anyone wanting to learn his
skills and knowledge. Plus, his son is a PJ (para-rescue) in the US Air Force.
